India: Will air pollution jack up health insurance costs? DW 03/13/2025
Briefly

Health insurance premiums are poised to rise in India, especially in polluted cities like New Delhi, as insurers evaluate the effects of air pollution on health costs. Following a report citing Delhi's status as the most polluted capital, discussions are underway to implement a 10-15% increase in premiums for new policies. This decision stems from increased pollution-related health claims and a clear correlation between pollution and diseases such as COPD and cardiovascular issues. Insurers stress the need for public awareness and better risk assessment.
"Many non-communicable diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are exacerbated by air pollution," said Manish Sarin, of Reliance General Insurance.
"There is no denying the fact that air pollution is rising in various metropolitan cities and is one of the factors in rising cases of health problems related to cardiovascular diseases," said Yatharth Garg, of the Insurance Institute of India.
