Sweden is revising its 1975 abortion law to adapt to medical advancements, allowing patients to take all abortion-related medication at home. The inquiry suggests enabling midwives to prescribe abortion medication, maintaining the requirement for an initial clinical assessment. It emphasizes inclusivity by proposing gender-neutral language, changing terms from 'woman' to 'person who is pregnant,' which acknowledges the rights of trans men who can also become pregnant. Additionally, the inquiry seeks to formally establish the right to abortion up to week 18 of pregnancy in Swedish law.
The inquiry proposes making it possible for patients to take all abortion medication at home and allowing midwives to issue prescriptions for it.
