Smartwatch and fitness tracker bands have 'very high concentrations' of this harmful chemical
Briefly

"The most remarkable thing we found in this study was the very high concentrations of just one PFAS - there were some samples above 1,000 parts per billion of PFHxA, which is much higher than most PFAS we have seen in consumer products," said Graham Peaslee, study co-author and professor emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
"PFAS have been linked to health issues such as reduced immune function, elevated cholesterol, thyroid dysfunction, liver damage, and certain cancers, creating a concerning health risk for consumers of these wearable devices."
This study marks the first examination of PFAS levels specifically in fitness trackers and smartwatch bands, highlighting a previously unexplored health concern.
The nickname 'forever chemicals' reflects their persistence in the environment, contributing to widespread contamination of soil and groundwater, and ultimately entering the food chain.
