Researchers have discovered that loneliness is not just a symptom of poor health but a contributing factor, altering protein levels linked to disease and mortality.
Prof Barbara Sahakian emphasized the importance of social connections, stating, 'it's part of a health thing...for their mental health and their wellbeing...to remain connected with other people.'
The study revealed that among lonelier individuals, proteins involved in inflammation and immune responses were elevated, showing a tangible health impact of isolation.
After analyzing data from over 42,000 participants, the researchers noted that most proteins linked to social isolation and loneliness were tied to increased mortality risk.
