In a resurfaced interview, Jim Davis reveals how Charles Schulz's character design limitations, like Charlie Brown's fixed arm reach, posed challenges when animating for 'A Boy Named Charlie Brown'.
Davis notes that Schulz addressed animation issues by adjusting character features for balance, such as Snoopy's feet size: "When Snoopy is on all fours...his back feet get bigger, giving him balance."
Schulz's assistance was pivotal for Davis, who applied similar strategies to Garfield: "Schulz drew big cat feet with Garfield standing up, and all of a sudden, Garfield was balanced."
Davis's remarks emphasize how character design impacts animation: "The jump from illustration to animation revealed ways in which they turned out to be, er, physically challenged."
