This 1920s Colonial House Was Once "Creepy and Sad" Until Bright Paint Revived It
Briefly

Gail Davis, founder of Gail Davis Designs, focuses on designing spaces that evoke comfort and love, rather than adhering to a signature style. Situated in her restored 1920s South Orange home, she strives to cultivate environments where individuals, particularly Black people and women, feel at ease and rejuvenated. Reflecting on her childhood experiences in her grandparents' Southern home, Davis aims to create warm, inviting spaces that foster genuine connections. Her design philosophy prioritizes comfort, moving away from traditional aesthetics to embrace a lived-in warmth that resonates with her clients.
"For me, especially for Black people and for women, especially in this climate, I want people to come home and feel like they have something for themselves where they're in control and where they feel loved."
"Home is everything," Davis says.
"I decorated as if my grandparents and great grandparents would visit, so that they would feel at home," she says of her own home.
"It was tailored, but it was inviting. There was never anything that made you feel unwelcome."
