The announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 has generated mixed reactions, particularly concerning its design and branding. While it retains elements of the original Switch, the new model appears more utilitarian, resembling competitors like the Steam Deck. Critics express disappointment over the lack of vibrant colors and the dull logo choice, feeling that Nintendo's identity for fun and innovation is diminished. The release is seen as an iterative update rather than a groundbreaking new console, resulting in a less exciting launch than expected.
It's fine that this is an iterative update, but when Nintendo gave us the New Nintendo 3DS, it did so with splashes of colour on both the console and the branding.
In its championing of personality and fun, Nintendo has always stood out from the competition, but that sense of joyful rebellion feels missing here.
