"I want to push against what I've always done": Magic: the Gathering artist explains how her imagination for fantasy was born
Briefly

Sarah Finnigan, a Houston-based artist, creates allegorical landscapes infused with fantastical elements to inspire curiosity and wonder. Growing up in Texas, she explored the development areas rich with woods, which fueled her imagination and artistic expression. Moments of artistic growth also came from her exposure to video games like Myst and Riven, which evoked feelings of eerie loneliness and mystery within their environments. Currently, her work reflects the narratives that landscapes tell, shaped by both personal experiences and the settings that have inspired her throughout her life.
The flat, monotonous landscape meant the threshold of what would inspire my imagination was low. The slightest sloping toward a river was downright mountainous to me.
My parents live out in Colorado, and even from just visiting them I feel myself become more accustomed to what used to take my breath away.
There was a game series in the 90s; the first one was called Myst but I especially loved the sequel Riven, which placed you on abandoned islands.
