How to Choose the Perfect T-Shirt
Briefly

As soon as Jeremy Allen White's Carmy Berzatto started doing his troubled-muscled chef thing in a white crew neck tee by German brand Merz b. Schwanen, the menswear world went into meltdown, reframing the very notion of a T-shirt altogether. It was no longer just a basic cotton garment, but a luxury item with a rich and artisanal history, something you should spend good money on.
The T-shirt began as one-piece underwear, which U.S. Navy sailors cut in half at the waist, creating a top and bottom and offering better flexibility. This was at the start of the 20th Century, and the Navy soon adopted the T-shirt undergarment as part of the official uniform.
Like all clothing, higher quality garments will cost more, last longer, and hold their form over time (generally speaking). Depending on your taste, and how you plan to wear your tees, once you get into the weeds of the T-shirt multiverse it makes sense to spend more—potentially way more than usual.
