The William Morris Gallery in London is celebrating its 75th anniversary with the 'Morris Mania' exhibition, featuring works and objects showcasing the global fascination with William Morris. This diverse exhibition includes historical pieces dating back to the 1860s, alongside contemporary items like AI-generated posters and personal contributions from the public. Notable exhibits range from a design on a nuclear submarine seat to Morris-inspired sports gear, while some contributions, like a themed coffin, were deemed unsuitable. The show reflects the wide-reaching impact and ongoing relevance of Morris's artistry.
The exhibition will bring together works...from the collection dating back to the 1860s, with items lent by other institutions, as well as a plethora of Morris-themed objects loaned and donated from members of the public.
The donations and loans range from unwanted merchandise, such as a Morris-themed bridge set, to 'very personal things that mean a lot to [people]', Garrard says.
Among these was a 'Strawberry Thief' patterned coffin, which 'just didn't feel like the right thing,' Garrard says.
