Each font, crafted on an 1860s-era Columbian press, showcases unique characteristics and variations in ink density. Pattinson's team has spent over two decades on this digitization project, engaging with international printers to expand their font collection. Fleckled aims to provide access to the letterpress aesthetic for creatives without their own presses, making timeless design accessible and appealing to the next generation, amid the growing influence of AI in creative fields.
The small flaws in the hand-carved wooden blocks are what give letterpress its distinctive character and enduring appeal.
We're in discussions with a few retired printers who own some truly remarkable private collections, exploring opportunities to digitise and sublicense their fonts.
