Why is Germany's Friedrich Merz so unpopular? DW 04/25/2025
Briefly

Friedrich Merz is expected to become Germany's tenth chancellor on May 6, pending approval of a coalition contract with the SPD. Despite winning the national election in February, Merz's popularity is waning; recent polls show only 21% of Germans believe him trustworthy, a significant decrease since last year. While he does well in being understandable to the public, his leadership and relatability ratings are low. Political experts suggest that the current coalition's unfavorable public support is influencing Merz's standing.
Even though he won the national election in late February, the 69-year-old's personal popularity seems to be on a permanent slide.
According to Ursula Munch, director of the Tutzing Academy for Political Education, it's not all his fault, pointing out that the government's support among voters is relatively low.
According to an April poll by research institute Forsa for Stern magazine, barely one in five (21%) consider Merz trustworthy, a significant drop from previous months.
Merz scored the highest on speaking clearly, with 60% of Germans believing he 'speaks understandably,' but this stands in contrast to his low ratings for leadership and trust.
