Hungary's Orban hosts Germany's AfD leader Alice Weidel DW 02/13/2025
Briefly

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently hosted Alice Weidel, the far-right AfD party's candidate for chancellor, marking a significant shift in his stance towards the AfD. Previously, Orban had kept his distance from the party, despite aligned ideologies, especially concerning immigration and EU relations. This meeting comes just before German elections, with Orban claiming the AfD represents the future. Weidel praised Hungary as a model for her party, indicating that Hungary's policies inspire the AfD's vision for Germany.
"Today I met the future of Germany. It was an honour to welcome you in Budapest, Chairwoman Alice Weidel!"
"It's completely clear that the AfD is the future," Orban said, adding that all of the far-right party's platform, from immigration to the economy, would be "beneficial for Hungary" if it were implemented in Germany.
Weidel hailed Hungary as a model for her party, saying the country was "a symbol for us, for Alternative for Germany, a symbol of reason and a symbol of sovereignty and independence."
Following the meeting with Weidel, Orban posted to social media: "Today I met the future of Germany."
