Belgian parliament scraps nuclear phaseout plan DW 05/15/2025
Briefly

Belgium's parliament voted to abandon its planned nuclear phaseout, initially set in 2003, in response to energy instability heightened by the war in Ukraine. The new decision allows existing nuclear plants to continue operations beyond the previously defined 2025 deadline. This policy shift, supported predominantly by the conservative-led coalition government, aims to ensure a more stable energy future and reflects a broader reconsideration of nuclear energy across Europe as other nations like the Netherlands and Sweden explore new nuclear projects to enhance energy security.
"The Federal Parliament has just turned the page on two decades of blockages and hesitation to pave the way for a realistic and resilient energy model," Energy Minister Mathieu Bihet said. "This is not just an energy reform; it is a decisive step for the economic, environmental, and strategic future of our country."
In 2003, Belgium passed a law for the gradual phaseout of nuclear energy, stipulating closure of nuclear power plants by 2025. However, facing energy uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, the phaseout was delayed.
