Heiko Maas admitted that the German government, intelligence services, and international community ‘all misjudged the situation’ in Afghanistan leading up to the Taliban’s takeover.
Maas remarked on the transparency and thoroughness of government cooperation but acknowledged differing interpretations on factual issues regarding the chaotic evacuation process.
The former foreign minister indicated that the process of issuing visas for local Afghan personnel was mishandled, leading to fears of Taliban retaliation and a delayed evacuation.
Maas expressed regret that more Afghan individuals could have been evacuated earlier had there been better agreements and preparations in place during the Taliban’s advance.
