On 8 May 1945, Europe marked the end of World War II with Germany's surrender. As the number of eyewitnesses diminishes, seven individuals from various European countries share their recollections. Among them is Dorothea Barron, a former WRNS member, who recalls her experiences of war and the joyous celebrations following the surrender, emphasizing the contrast between the fear of bombings and the exuberance of victory. These personal narratives shed light on the historical significance and human impact of the war, especially in a context where European security concerns persist today.
I joined the WRNS when I was 18. I was a visual signaller... We all went completely mad. We were broadcasting over loud hailers to all the ships.
There was just sheer delight... Out on the streets there was cheering and singing and dancing and everything. The ships dressed in celebration. It was wonderful.
