Shoplifting on the rise in Germany DW 07/03/2025
Briefly

In 2024, Germany experienced record levels of shoplifting, with an estimated $5.84 billion lost, a 3% increase from 2023. The majority of these losses, around $4.2 billion, stemmed from theft by customers, employees, and delivery workers. Organized shoplifting also rose by 5%, accounting for one-third of total losses. To compensate for theft, retailers increased prices by approximately 1.5%. Criminologist Nicole Bogelein expressed skepticism about the reliability of these findings, noting that a vast majority of theft cases remain unnoticed.
According to Germany's Retail Institute, theft from customers, employees, or delivery workers resulted in approximately 4.2 billion euros in losses, with shoplifting playing a significant role.
The rise in organized shoplifting has been notable, making up a third of total losses, with thieves using coordinated tactics to execute thefts.
The study calculated that about 1.5% of retail prices are now a direct result of theft and security measures, highlighting the financial impact on retailers.
Criminologist Nicole Bogelein believes the study's claims might not reflect the actual situation, arguing that estimates suggest 98% of theft cases go undetected.
