According to the German Federal Statistical Office, around 973,000 Syrians were living in Germany at the end of 2023. About 712,000 have refugee status, including asylum seekers. Many arrived in 2015 seeking protection.
Syrian nationals represented the largest group of naturalized citizens last year, with 75,500 individuals gaining German citizenship, averaging 6.8 years of residence in Germany prior to naturalization.
In 2024, Syria emerged again as the top country of origin for asylum seekers in Germany, with almost 75,000 applications submitted by Syrians by November, reflecting ongoing instability.
Although many Syrians living in Germany now hold permanent residence, a significant number remain under temporary stay orders, limiting their access to work and education.
