Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the Bundeswehr have recruiting stands at Gamescom in Cologne. The BND offers a game called "BND Legends Operation Blackbox" that casts players as undercover agents trying to foil a cyberattack and will be made available on a public platform. The game tests digital skills, communications, teamwork and stress resistance. The Bundeswehr provides simulators to drive tanks, fly helicopters, and a physical workout in bulletproof gear under a poster reading "Are you ready for the next level?" Critics from the German Peace Society argue military recruitment is inappropriate at a gaming event and point to violent game mechanics that reward simulated killing.
