Germany: 1 in 4 immigrants doesn't want to stay DW 06/17/2025
Briefly

Despite a weakening economy, Germany faces a significant shortage of skilled workers across various sectors, particularly in healthcare, IT, and construction, along with educators and drivers. By the end of 2024, around 1.4 million positions remained unfilled. Immigrant labor has significantly contributed to employment, particularly in healthcare, where many doctors and nurses are foreign-born. However, a new study indicates that many immigrants contemplate leaving Germany, with 26% considering departure and 3% making concrete plans to leave, highlighting retention challenges within the workforce.
"Twenty-six percent, or around 2.6 million people, say that they actually considered leaving Germany last year, i.e., they thought about leaving the country," said Yuliya Kosyakova.
"Around 3%, or 300,000 people, already have concrete plans to leave," highlighted Yuliya Kosyakova during the presentation of the study, emphasizing critical employment challenges.
