A new extreme mould epidemic is affecting Danish museums, threatening significant paintings and cultural objects. Known as aspergillus section restricti, this fungal strain can survive in harsh conditions and has been found in 12 museums, including the National Museum of Denmark. With ongoing preliminary studies at 150 additional sites, experts warn that this mould can decimate museum artefacts, as it prefers dry conditions unlike typical fungi. Conservator Camilla Jul Bastholm believes this issue is likely global, emphasizing the need for improved detection methods to protect cultural heritage.
