"Starting next year, Android will require all apps to be registered by verified developers in order to be installed by users on certified Android devices. This creates crucial accountability, making it much harder for malicious actors to quickly distribute another harmful app after we take the first one down."
""I am sort of overwhelmed with the amount of support," he said."
""I would ballpark estimate that over 90-95 percent of people are somewhere between concerned and outraged, but pretty much everyone is against it.""
Google plans to require developer verification for all apps installed on certified Android devices, including sideloaded apps. A petition organized by Marc Prud'hommeaux, called "Keep Android Open," aims to oppose the verification requirement, rally developers, and raise antitrust concerns about Google overseeing developer verification for Android Certified devices. The petition does not affect alternative Android or AOSP builds such as /e/OS, LineageOS, or GrapheneOS. Opposition among Android developers is widespread, with Prud'hommeaux estimating 90–95% of developers are concerned or outraged. Google says Play has required verification since 2023 to prevent fraud, malware, and data theft.
