Google recently announced an update to restore functionality to second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices that lost casting capabilities and some that were bricked following factory resets. The update includes a new Google Home app version that facilitates the revival of affected devices. Google did not specify the cause of the issue, but it is suspected to be related to an expired certificate. The rollout of the app is staggered, starting today, and updates will be provided via the Google Nest Community page.
"Everything should now function normally," Google writes in an email to affected owners of second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio.
The new Google Home app update (version 3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) includes the ability to set up and revive broken-after-reset Chromecast devices.
