Ghana: Can a 24-hour economy change a nation? DW 07/24/2025
Briefly

President John Mahama's administration focuses on revamping Ghana's economy, emphasizing a transition to a diversified economic model. The 24-Hour Plus Programme aims to enhance job creation through continuous operations in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and essential services. This initiative seeks to triple operational hours from eight to 24 daily, projected to create 1.7 million new jobs by the decade's end. Despite aspirations for an all-day economy, challenges exist regarding feasibility in enhancing infrastructure and creating a supportive environment for such operations in cities like Accra.
This policy is made for Ghana and the future. The 24-Hour Plus Programme will be the catalyst for Ghana's economic growth, and we are sure it will make Ghana prosper.
The initiative chiefly targets existing key sectors in the country such as agriculture, manufacturing, and essential services but could be expanded to other areas in the long-term.
By the end of the decade, this ambitious policy could create 1.7 million new jobs across the nation, which is crucial for economic recovery.
Although Accra and cities in Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and Kenya boast vibrant informal night-time economies, implementing a 24-hour economy on a national scale poses significant challenges.
