Wexford gym to take on 10-hour challenge to burn 5,000 calories for breast cancer awareness
Members of Screwloose Gym in Gorey and Courtown will take part in a charity challenge on Saturday, May 23. The event begins at 9 a.m. in Screwloose Gorey, where participants will attempt to burn 2,500 calories on an assault bike. They will then run about 8 km to Screwloose Courtown to burn the remaining 2,500 calories. The challenge is expected to take around 10 hours and aims to test physical and mental endurance. The fundraiser was created after a longtime gym member was diagnosed with breast cancer, with the goal of raising awareness and gathering funds. The public is encouraged to join by riding the bike and supporting the effort.
"The event will start at 9 a.m. in Screwloose Gorey. There, the team will attempt to burn 5,000 calories on the assault bike - beginning with 2,500 calories in the Gorey gym, before running approximately 8km to Screwloose Courtown to complete the final 2,500 calories."
"Jordan Scanlon of Screwloose said the idea came after discovering a longtime member of the gym had been diagnosed with breast cancer. "There's a lot of people affected by breast cancer, friends and neighbours - it seems to be happening more often now, so we wanted to raise awareness and gather funds," he said."
"The event is expected to take around 10 hours to complete and will test both physical and mental endurance. Screwloose Gym are encouraging the public to get involved by jumping on the bike, burning a few calories and becoming part of the challenge."
""Anything is hard, but with a community and the right support system, you can do anything." With the event, Jordan and Screwloose hope to bring the community together for a challenging but rewarding day. "If you bring people together nothing's impossible.""
