Tate Modern announced a historic donation of a monumental triptych by Joan Mitchell, named after her dog, Iva. Donated by billionaire Jorge M Perez and his wife, this significant artwork marks the most substantial gift to the museum since 1969. The painting highlights the evolving recognition of female artists and aims to enhance representation in the British national art collection. Tate's director, Maria Balshaw, noted the importance of such generous contributions amidst the challenges of funding, with only 30% coming from government sources.
Balshaw said the Mitchell triptych was the single most significant gift to the institution since Mark Rothko donated nine large murals in 1969.
Darlene and Jorge M Perez described the triptych as priceless and emphasized its ability to create an incredible partnership with Rothko's works.
Balshaw emphasized that the gift would change the British national collection permanently, marking a rebalancing in representation of female artists.
About 30% of Tate's funding comes from government grants, indicating how crucial donations like this triptych are for the institution.
