Philanthropic Giving to Higher Ed on the Rise

Philanthropic contributions to higher education institutions saw a minor uptick of 3 percent after inflation adjustments, totaling $61.5 billion from 2023 to 2024. Noteworthy is a significant 13.3 percent increase in foundation support, alongside a 7.5 percent rise in alumni giving. In contrast, corporate contributions declined by 7.3 percent. Donor priorities evolved, with operational gifts rising and capital gifts, particularly for endowments and student financial aid, experiencing notable growth. The report emphasizes the vital role philanthropy plays in sustaining higher education and enhancing its transformative potential.
"Philanthropy remains essential to the success and sustainability of higher education," Sue Cunningham, president and CEO of CASE, wrote in the report. "The consistent generosity of donors reflects a collective belief in the transformative power of education and its ability to create a more prosperous society."
Nearly half of endowment gifts, 48.3 percent, were designated for student financial aid. Almost 16 percent of endowment gifts went toward faculty and staff compensation.
