St Raphael's Hospice in North Cheam is struggling under immense pressure as staffing levels decrease and resources dwindle. Joint CEO Becca Trower has expressed serious concerns about sustainability, noting increased staff sickness and reduced morale. The hospice was forced to cut its hospice at home service last September due to insufficient NHS funding, significantly impacting care delivery. Despite having beds for inpatient care, Trower believes the hospice's value lies in community support, where recent cuts have drastically affected its ability to assist patients and families during critical times.
The cuts have also had a direct impact on patient care. People used to get planned visits where we could manage timings and medication, but now we can't.
Trower admits: I have never seen anything like this before in my time here. We have had more staff sickness in the past month than we have ever had.
I worry how much longer they can continue. They have not got that no satisfaction that they had at the start. This blitz spirit can't last forever.
The devastating cut of its hospice at home service last September as the main factor threatening its ability to help the community.
