Moussa, an undocumented construction worker in France, joined a strike to secure legal paperwork after over a year of unfulfilled promises. He, along with others, worked tirelessly on the Adidas Arena for the 2024 Olympics, earning minimal pay while using false documentation. The strike led to an agreement involving the city of Paris and employers to expedite their residency applications. Despite this progress, months later, none of the workers have had their papers processed, leaving many in limbo regarding their legal status in France.
After intense discussions between Moussa's employer, the city of Paris, the workers and their union, a list of 14 undocumented individuals who worked at the site was handed over to the French police prefecture, which deals with visa requests, in order for their paperwork to be processed.
He was compensated with normal pay slips by using someone else's papers - a common strategy among undocumented workers. He was paid about 75 euros ($85) a day for grueling 10-hour shifts at the arena - a rate, he said, that did not include transport expenses, masks or other protective gear.
