Latest: New French citizenship language rules DO apply to applications by marriage
Briefly

France's 2024 immigration law raises the required language proficiency for citizenship from B1 to B2. A recent memo from Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau clarified that this standard applies to both marriage-based and residency-based applications. This change aims to enhance linguistic integration among new citizens. The new language requirements will take effect no later than January 1, 2026, and signify a broader initiative by the French government to increase overall language capabilities among immigrants. The new regulations highlight France's ongoing commitment to language proficiency as part of the naturalization process.
The legislature has decided to raise the level of French proficiency required to qualify for naturalisation. Article 20 of the law of January 26th, 2024 (...) will increase from level B1 of the European framework to level B2.
The implementing text will be published in the coming months and will enter into force no later than January 1st, 2026, as planned by parliament. It will also apply to 'déclaration' applications submitted by spouses of French nationals.
