A stash of never-before-seen correspondence and artifacts belonging to former French president Charles de Gaulle was discovered in a safe and will go on auction.
The auction house, Artcurial, discovered not only letters from de Gaulle's time as a prisoner but also his appeal that sparked the French Resistance, which will be displayed.
Among the treasures is correspondence from Josephine Baker, who was part of the French Resistance and referred to de Gaulle in an affectionate yet playful manner.
The auctioneer, Stephane Aubert, expressed surprise at the trove's historical significance and the personal documents detailing de Gaulle's life from childhood to wartime leadership.
