Sexual violence on French public transport reaches record levels
Briefly

A report by the National Observatory on Violence Against Women revealed a troubling increase in sexual violence on public transport in France, particularly in the Île-de-France region. In 2024, 3,374 incidents were reported, marking an 86% increase since 2016. Over 90% of victims are women, predominantly under 30. The report notes that perpetrators are mainly male, with many victims hesitant to report their experiences. Urban planning researcher Manon Marguerit emphasizes that public transport's characteristics exacerbate incidents of violence, which often overshadow other significant forms of abuse like verbal harassment.
More than nine out of every 10 victims were women, with 75% of them aged under 30.
These incidents are a reality, but they dominate public perception, overshadowing other forms of violence.
