Police in Nice have initiated a new crackdown on speeding drivers on the Promenade des Anglais, stating that offenders will be taken into custody instead of receiving a ticket. This decision follows concerning road safety statistics, with 15 deaths on the avenue in 2023 alone. The Promenade is a famous three-lane road with pedestrian areas and cycling paths. Local officials emphasize aggressive driving behaviors, including speeding and substance use, leading to numerous fatalities, especially among young individuals. Daily speed checks will be enforced, alongside an active speed camera catching thousands of offenders.
The normal procedure if you are pulled over for speeding in France is to be given a ticket and allowed to continue on your way, unless your driving is judged to be dangerous or you are committing other driving offences such as driving without insurance.
Deaths on the Promenade account for almost 20 percent of the road deaths in the entire Alpes-Maritimes département. Over the past three years, five motorcyclists, four pedestrians, three cyclists, one motorbike passenger, one car driver and a scooter rider have died.
We have extremely aggressive behaviour here, characterised by incivility. There is obviously speeding, alcohol and drugs, and they are leading to deaths, often of very young people.
The local Préfet in Nice has announced that in order to crackdown on speeding drivers - of both cars and motorbikes - anyone caught going at high speeds along the city's Promenade des Anglais will now be placée en garde à vue (taken into custody).
