French authorities reported that an overcrowded vessel attempting to cross the English Channel set off near Dunkirk, carrying around 40 people. After picking up more individuals on the Gravelines coast, the overloaded boat was spotted, leading to the rescue of 15 individuals. Tragically, one person was declared dead despite medical efforts. The vessel departed Wednesday evening west of the port of Dunkirk with around 40 people on board.
The Dunkirk public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident.
The French coastguard said it would continue to monitor the boat as it headed towards the UK with around 80 people still on board.
