The auction included three of the images, including a pixelated avocado that brought in over $100,000 and a drawing that appears to be derived from a Super Mario mushroom franchise that sold for north of $240,000, according to Derek Parsons, a Sotheby's spokesman.
The results hark back to the frenzy that swept digital asset markets a few years ago as digital artworks and non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, began fetching mind-boggling sums and capturing public attention; a NFT by artist Beeple fetched $69 million at auction house Christie's. However, many of these collections were built on top of the Ethereum blockchain.
