German authorities are urging stricter regulations on illegally imported and homemade fireworks after at least five fatalities occurred due to personal-use pyrotechnics on New Year’s Eve.
The widespread use of personal firecrackers in Germany is only lightly regulated, leading to injuries and necessitating significant police and emergency response efforts each New Year's Eve.
Most of the fatalities were young men killed in separate incidents while trying to ignite pyrotechnics, sometimes using illicit firework bombs that they had creatively altered.
Berlin's police union calls for a crackdown on illicit fireworks imports and a ban on private fireworks, citing the increasing danger posed by these explosives.
