France's death rate at 'historically low' level
Briefly

In 2023, France recorded 637,082 deaths, a decrease of 36,000 from the previous year, creating a mortality rate of 828.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. This decline is mostly attributed to falling COVID-19 mortality, accounting for 60 percent of the decrease, though underlying trends of declining death rates predate the pandemic. Questions are raised regarding the future of France's social care system due to a reported decline in birth rates. While major death causes decreased, respiratory and infectious disease mortality rates showed slight increases. Cancer remains the leading cause of death for both genders.
"The immediate downward trend is largely due to the drop in mortality caused by COVID-19 - accounting for 60 percent of the decrease, according to a joint study by the Direction de la recherche, des études, de l'évaluation et des statistiques (DREES) and others."
"Despite much lower death rates than in the 2020-2022 period, Covid remained the ninth most common cause of death in 2023, leading to 14,000 deaths, mostly among the elderly."
