The 1970s Burger King Sandwich The Chain Brought Back 4 Decades Later - Tasting Table
Briefly

The Yumbo sandwich by Burger King, a hot ham and cheese offering introduced in 1971, gained popularity quickly due to its novelty and warm serving method. Priced at around $0.80, it faced tough competition from the cheaper Big Mac. Despite early success and multiple marketing campaigns, the Yumbo was phased out by the late '70s and, although there was a brief revival effort in the late '80s, it disappeared from the menu entirely by the '90s. Burger King attempted a revival of the Yumbo in 2014, driven by nostalgic customer demand, but the execution differed from the original.
The Yumbo was a huge success when it was first put on the menu. The concept of a hot ham and cheese sandwich may not feel revolutionary today, but in the '70s it was a welcome novelty from the burger chain.
Burger King began to phase out the Yumbo within six years of its release. There was a short attempt to bring it back in the late '80s, but by the '90s it was truly gone.
In December 2014, four decades after Yumbo's original release, Burger King announced that the sandwich was coming back. The reason for this surprising return were the customers who never stopped asking for its return.
