Shrinkflation bites as boxes of Quality Street and Celebrations lose weight
"made the tubs of the confectionery lighter. Someone has also taken a bite out of Toblerone, with 20g shaved off its chocolatey peaks, reducing a 360g bar to 340g. The latest round of shrinkflation means anyone prising the lid off the Quality Street box may be underwhelmed by the number of sweets as 50g has been lost from the weight, taking it from 600g to 550g."
"Nestle announced it was altering how Quality Street's Purple One and Orange Crunch looked. As well as changing shape, they are now lighter: the unwrapped Purple One used to weigh 9.59g and is now 8.46g. The new look Orange Crunch is down from 9.06g to 8.72g. You can't even seek solace from shrinkflation in a Terry's Chocolate Orange as earlier this year the ball dwindled from 157g to 145g."
Major seasonal boxed chocolates have been reduced in weight ahead of Christmas: Quality Street tubs dropped from 600g to 550g, Celebrations from 550g to 500g, Toblerone from 360g to 340g, and Terry's Chocolate Orange from 157g to 145g. Individual Quality Street pieces such as the Purple One and Orange Crunch were made lighter, with the Purple One falling from 9.59g to 8.46g and Orange Crunch from 9.06g to 8.72g. Cocoa supply problems and rising cocoa costs following poor West African harvests have pushed chocolate prices up, with chocolate on UK shelves rising 17.2% year-on-year to July.
