Electric Thai Food Lights Up the Menu at Holy Basil
"It's a challenging feat to interrupt the already boisterous Thai food scene in Los Angeles, but chef Deau Arpapornnopparat did just that when he opened Holy Basil in early 2021. The Bangkok street food-inspired empire began as a simple Downtown Los Angeles window and has since expanded to Atwater Village and, most recently, Santa Monica, with an impending move to a larger Arts District space. The food at Holy Basil does not hold back; it is spicy, electrifyingly sour, and viscerally vibrant and memorable."
"Every table has an order of the beef tataki, thin slices of angus beef dressed in a sharp chile lime sauce and sprinkled with toasted rice powder, chopped shallots, and green onions. Grandma's fish and rice - a bowl of fried barramundi smashed and tossed with rice and lime-laced fish sauce - is deceptively simple and nostalgic. Khao soi uses bouncy paccheri instead of noodles for a fusion version of the northern Thai curry that feels refreshingly unique."
Chef Deau Arpapornnopparat opened Holy Basil in early 2021 as a Bangkok street food–inspired concept that began as a Downtown Los Angeles window and expanded to Atwater Village and Santa Monica with plans for a larger Arts District space. The menu emphasizes bold, spicy, and sour flavors that leave a lasting impression. Signature plates include beef tataki, Grandma's fish and rice, khao soi with paccheri, and kaeng karee shrimp made from homemade yellow curry paste. The Atwater location is small and casual with bar seating and limited tables and shares a plaza with Wanderlust Creamery. The Holy burger appears only on Mondays.
