Chipotle to pay $246K penalty for allegedly breaking Calif.'s gift card law
"District attorneys from Ventura, Los Angeles, Sonoma, and Shasta counties sued the restaurant chain in September after an investigation found that the company had allegedly not been letting customers cash out gift cards under $10 for at least four years. The practice was allegedly a violation under state law, which requires businesses to offer customers cash value for any gift card with less than $10."
"On Oct. 17, Chipotle entered a stipulated judgment that does not admit any wrongdoing but requires the company to pay the six-figure penalty, as well as create a website portal for customers to request gift card refunds under $10. "Gift cards are real money purchased with hard-earned cash," Nathan J. Hochman, the Los Angeles County district attorney, said in a news release."
