The Suffolk occupies a renovated 17th-century coaching inn in Aldeburgh and opened in 2022 after a seaside pop-up led by founder George Pell. Six guest rooms sit above the restaurant, each named for nearby places and furnished in a New England-style coastal scheme by designer Kate Fulford. Interiors include whitewashed clapboard walls, rattan lampshades, vintage and antique furnishings, and generous beds. All rooms have access to a landing pantry stocked with teas, coffee, pre-mixed cocktails, and local charcuterie. A roof terrace overlooks the pebble beach and sea. The bar serves cocktails like the Sur-Mertini. The main restaurant and bar downstairs is headed by Luke Truelove.
Founder George Pell first came down to Aldeburgh between Covid-era lockdowns, decamping the staff of Soho's L'Escargot (where he was working at the time) to the seaside for a very successful pop-up. With that going so well and the building up for grabs he decided to stay for good, renovating the old 17th century coaching inn where the pop-up had taken place into what we now have as The Suffolk.
We were in The Havergate, which had a lovely old period fireplace and an excellent bay window with seating looking directly out to sea just a few yards away. All rooms have access to a small pantry on the landing too, where you can pick up not just teas and coffee, but also pre-mixed cocktails and local charcuterie and cheese such as the famed Baron Bigod. A perfect little afternoon pick me up.
