Bay Area steakhouse chain down to 1 restaurant after impending closure
"The Izzy's brand was founded in 1987 by Sam DuVall, Samantha's father. It was named after a San Francisco bootlegger named Isadore "Izzy" Gomez who ran a saloon in North Beach. The Izzy's brand previously also had locations in Corte Madera, San Ramon and Oakland. The closure of the San Carlos outpost is to leave the San Francisco flagship as the last remaining Izzy's."
"After DuVall died in 2020, his daughter took the reins as managing partner of DuVall Family Hospitality Group. To continue her father's legacy, she remodeled the Marina flagship location and brought in a Thomas Keller protege as the new executive chef. Chef Daniel Lucero previously worked at Keller's Bouchon Bistro in Las Vegas, Italienne in New York and San Francisco's now-shuttered Afici restaurant. The Marina restaurant reopened in February 2025."
Izzy's on the Peninsula at 525 Skyway Road in San Carlos will close after two decades, with the final day of service on Oct. 4. The family-owned steakhouse has been known for prime rib, strip steaks, butterflied whole trout and other fresh seafood offerings. Owner Samantha DuVall Bechtel plans to concentrate operations on the San Francisco flagship Izzy's Steaks & Chops, which becomes the sole remaining location from a peak five-restaurant chain. The San Carlos site opened in 2005, underwent a major remodel and patio addition after a 2022 closure, and reopened in early 2024.
