""This is not a decision we've taken lightly," said a Crown Estate spokesman about not renewing the lease and removing the restaurant from its current premises."
""Most European cities cherish their legendary resturants. Why in the name of God would we want to lose Veeraswamy?" said Corrigan."
Veeraswamy, founded in 1926 and still at its original Regent Street site, faces a lease non-renewal in a dispute with the Crown Estate. The Crown Estate says the building needs refurbishment that is not compatible with the restaurant remaining and describes the decision as not taken lightly. Supporters have gathered more than 18,000 petition signatures and will deliver the petition to Buckingham Palace seeking King Charles III's backing to protect the restaurant as a living piece of shared cultural history. Celebrity chefs and a centenary dinner in March aim to rally further support.
