"For almost 50 years, streams of people have stepped through the restaurant's towering glass door into its light-filled threshold, where a series of polished wooden steps unfolds, leading to the dining room with its walls of windows and the brass-topped bar where a waterfall gently spills behind rows of neatly shelved bottles. Outside, a two-tiered deck overlooks the Tahoe City Marina and, beyond the boat slips, a panoramic view of Lake Tahoe."
"But as so many in the restaurant business know, even the most timeless places can't escape the bigger forces of change. At the end of this month, Jake's on the Lake is set to lock up its glass door for good. Redevelopment plans are underway to demolish Tahoe City's Boatworks Mall, which houses Jake's and a few other local businesses, and build a luxury hotel."
Jake's on the Lake operated in Tahoe City for almost fifty years as a lakefront restaurant known for a towering glass door, polished wooden steps, a dining room with walls of windows, a brass-topped bar with a waterfall behind shelved bottles, and a two-tiered deck overlooking Tahoe City Marina and Lake Tahoe. The restaurant will close at the end of its lease at the end of the month, with a closing party set for Oct. 25. Redevelopment plans propose demolishing the Boatworks Mall to build a luxury hotel; the project is not yet approved. Jake's opened in 1978, founded by Sandy Saxten and Rob Thibaut as part of TS Restaurants, which emphasized waterfront locations, wood accents, warm service, and the motto "Make money with Aloha."
