"With executive chef Nanor Harboyan and head baker Jacob Fraijo at the wheel, Helms Bakery opened with a slate of sourdough country loaves nestled in wood baskets and seasonal fruit tarts dotted with sliced figs and blueberries. On its first day open, crowds filtered through the 14,000-square-foot space, lining up for impeccably laminated croissants from the coffee bar or fried chicken, which emerged at 11 a.m. from the deli counter in the back corner."
"After just over a year open, Sang Yoon's Culver City Helms Bakery complex is closing on December 14, 2025. Yoon announced the sudden closure in an Instagram post on December 4, writing, "The last several years in Los Angeles have brought immense challenges for independent restaurants and changed how people dine and how businesses operate. Together, these factors have made it increasingly difficult to sustain Helms in its current form." Eater reached out for further comment."
Helms Bakery in Culver City will close its doors on December 14, 2025, after opening on November 1, 2024. The project faced nearly 12 years of delays related to red tape, permitting, and regulatory issues before opening in a historic 14,000-square-foot building that operated as a wholesale bakery from 1931 to 1969. Operational challenges and shifts in dining behavior made sustaining the business difficult. The bakery launched with executive chef Nanor Harboyan and head baker Jacob Fraijo offering sourdough loaves, laminated croissants, seasonal tarts, fried chicken, gimbap, and Thrifty ice cream. A planned standalone restaurant called Dinette did not materialize.
