A Corner Store Sibling Is About to Open in the Old Chumley's Space
Briefly

The Eighty Six will open at 86 Bedford Street on Tuesday, September 9 as a 35-seat steakhouse in the West Village. Owners Tilman Fertitta, Eugene Remm, and Catch Hospitality Group operate the space and position the restaurant as approachable steak-and-seafood with 'uptown elegance and downtown swagger.' Reservations will appear on Resy with a week-ahead release and some space reserved for walk-ins. The location has a long history as Chumley's, later Frog Club, and went through multiple iterations including a chef-driven menu under Victoria Blamey. Chef Michael Vignola will lead the kitchen, offering oysters, dressed shrimp, sardine and tuna toasts, and ravioli.
Famous address 86 Bedford Street is home to a new restaurant that's opening on Tuesday, September 9: The Eighty Six is an intimate 35-seat steakhouse in the West Village run by partners Tilman Fertitta, Eugene Remm, and the Catch Hospitality Group (CHG) team. They're behind a growing steak-and-seafood brand as well as the impossible-to-get-into Corner Store in Soho. The Eighty Six is going for "uptown elegance with downtown swagger," Remm tells Eater, with an emphasis on "easily understood" and "approachable" fare.
Once home of the famed Chumley's, which opened in the 1920s, the speakeasy-turned-literary haunt is credited with coining the term "86," referring to when a restaurant is out of a dish, as well as when a customer is being kicked out of a place. Fast-forward to 2016, when Chumley's reopened with a glossy polish before closing due to the pandemic in 2020. It was during that era that Victoria Blamey took over the kitchen, ensuring a chef-driven experience over what had been a low-key pub.
