25-year-old Mexican restaurant in SF suddenly closes, citing 'rising costs'
Briefly

Tlaloc Sabor Mexicano in San Francisco's Financial District closed suddenly after 25 years, citing rising costs and a landlord sale. The three-story restaurant was known for farm-to-table ingredients and a large salsa bar. The building at 525 Commercial St. has an interested buyer and was listed for just under $3 million. Cancun in Berkeley is assuming Tlaloc's catering orders and expects at least six weeks before reopening a new location, either a brick-and-mortar site or a food truck. Chef-owner Jorge Saldana is focusing on opening a new restaurant in Mexico City and sources produce from a 130-acre organic Sabor Mexicano Farm in Guerneville. Sabor Mexicano branded salsa, tortilla chips and queso are sold in grocery stores.
The three-story Mexican restaurant, known for its farm-to-table ingredients and large salsa bar and located in San Francisco's Financial District, closed on Monday due to "rising costs," the restaurant's team shared in an announcement on their website and on social media. "The landlord sold the building," Miguel Isidro, the front-of-house supervisor at Cancun, told SFGATE on Wednesday. "And it was short notice, so we didn't have the time to complete a plan for the relocation, but we are working on it."
For now, Cancun in Berkeley is taking over all of Tlaloc's catering orders. Isidro said he expects it will take at least six weeks to open a new location, which will either be another brick-and-mortar restaurant or a food truck. Currently, the restaurant's chef-owner Jorge Saldana is focusing on opening a new restaurant in Mexico City in a few weeks, Isidro said.
