Ansari wrote, starred in, produced, and directed the film, which blends comedy and magical realism to examine hardship, envy, the gig economy, and widening income inequality. The plot centers on a guardian angel who switches the life of a down-on-his-luck gig worker with that of a self-made millionaire to show that money is not everything. Keke Palmer portrays Elena, an idealistic hardware-store employee who organizes her coworkers into a union. The film began from Ansari's concept about two men living very different lives and evolved into a comedic intervention by an angel.
