F1: The Movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, provides an immersive cinematic experience that makes audiences feel as if they are racing at 220 miles per hour. Cinematographer Claudio Miranda aimed for a visceral experience, akin to Top Gun, utilizing cutting-edge techniques to enhance realism. The film features a veteran racer helping a struggling Formula 1 team during live Grand Prix weekends in 2023 and 2024. Modified Formula 2 cars equipped with specialized cameras were used to capture authentic racing action on iconic circuits around the world.
"Like Top Gun, we wanted a visceral experience," Miranda tells me.
F1: The Movie marks yet another project with Miranda as Kosinski's director of photography.
Filming took place at real Grand Prix weekends during the 2023 and 2024 World Championships.
More than a dozen fist-sized cameras, made exclusively for F1, were placed on modified Formula 2 cars that the actors drove for real.
